Trip to Chicago

So I was asked to speak at the Women In Government conference in Chicago on health IT policy on Thursday, June 25th, so I thought I would extend my trip by a day and take a long weekend to visit with one of my best friends, Kirsten. It worked out perfectly. I flew out Wednesday, June 24th and arrived in Chicago around 4 pm. I was really excited about this trip because I had been to Chicago a couple times before, but it was in March, so the weather wasn't the best and the one time I was there in sunny weather, it was when Clark and I were driving across the country and we only had time for a Cubs game and we were gone the next day. This was my first trip to Chicago during the summer. On Wednesday, I stayed at the hotel of my conference, the InterContinental, which was on Michigan Ave. It was right in the heart of the "Magnificent Mile" and I couldn't be happier. My hotel room was gorgeous and I quickly decided to take advantage of the nice weather and take a stroll on Michigan Avenue and do some window shopping. It was fun to walk up and down this "tourist trap" and I went in lots of stores and despite my best attempts to spend money, I couldn't find one thing to buy other than a Chicago skyline mug at Starbucks. It was fun, nevertheless, to walk around and did I mention it was HOT? It was 95 degrees and a bit on the muggy side...in fact, it kind of reminded me of when I lived in DC. However, it seemed bearable. After some walking and shopping, I checked out this wine/chocolate/cheese bar in the lobby of my hotel. It sounded too good to be true. What a fantastic idea! The menu is all about pairings, so I selected a trio wine pairing of Pinots (pinot grigio and two different pinot noirs) and then also selected a trio of cheese that would complement these wines. It was delicious. Since I was feeling the urge to splurge, I also went to the trio of chocolate and that was TO DIE FOR. Delicious. Feeling satisfied that I had a dinner of wine, cheese, and chocolate, I checked out the workout facility, pool, and sauna. I thought I could relax that night in the sauna and hot tub and get a workout in the next morning before my conference. However, to my surprise, I discovered the hotel charged $20/day for use of the workout room, pool, hot tub, and sauna! Are you kidding me? I thought it was ridiculous, so I opted not to pay for that. Oh yeah, the hotel also charged $15/day for internet access. Okay, is it just me or am I the only person that thinks these perks should be included in your room rate? I mean, the hotel was $300/night, so you'd think it would have included all of that! Argh! Remind me not to stay at such snobby hotels on my own dime!

So, I spent the night watching TV and getting a good night's rest in the huge King-sized bed. I went to my conference and was done by 4 pm. Lucky for me, I was staying with my friend, Kirsten at her new condo. She works just a few blocks down from the hotel I was staying at, so I just walked down to her office while she wrapped up work. I walked across the bridge over the Chicago River and still loving the 90+ degree heat. Right as I arrived to her work (Kirsten works as web editor for Fox News Chicago) the news broke of Michael Jackson's death. WOW, I was in shock, but I have to admit, it was pretty cool to be in a newsroom when this news broke. Kirsten was running around "in her element" and it was neat to see her in action.

After she finished work, we went back to her place to drop off my stuff at her condo, which by the way is AMAZING. She bought a condo a few blocks from Wrigley Field and she has a cute loft-like condo (1 bedroom, 1 bath) with a living room and kitchen. She also has secure access, a parking space, and a little patio with BBQ and table/chairs. Too cute. Anyway, we walked to a nearby Mexican restaurant for margaritas and fajitas...delicious.

The next day (Friday, June 26th) Kirsten got up early to go to work and I slept in. I got up and took Pheobe, Kirsten's adorable golden retriever/collie mix, for a long walk around the neighborhood. We walked around Wrigley and the surrounding neighborhood. Then I took the L train to meet Kirsten downtown and we were headed to a baseball game. And not just any baseball game, but the Chicago cross-town rival series between the Cubs vs. White Sox. And it was at US Cellular Field, the home of the White Sox. We were headed to the South Side of Chicago.

Okay, I just had to take a picture of this advertisement...come on, seriously? Mullet Night? WOW is all I can say. Those White Sox fans must be trashy if you are willing to come sporting a mullet in public.

Kirsten and Andi at baseball game - we were up in nosebleed section, but it was well mixed of both Cubs and White Sox fans...people were shouting at each other, and as the hot afternoon dragged on and as the beers were flowing among fans, the profanity only increased

Okay, after the baseball game we went back to Kirsten's condo and hung out on her patio, grilled some burgers, and drank some beers.

The next day (Saturday, June 27th) we got up and went for a run with Pheobe along Lake Michigan and it was BEAUTIFUL! Kirsten lives in such a fantastic location - just a few blocks from the L train, just a few blocks from Wrigley Field, and just a 10 minute walk from the shore of Lake Michigan. It was gorgeous. After our run, we treated ourselves to brunch at this cute little outdoor cafe. Then Kirsten had to shuffle off to get her hair dyed and cut. Since this is a 3-4 process, I hooked up with some of her neighbor friends to get a pedicure and some shopping. I got my toes painted red (my fave color!) and found a trendy and large white flower ring, some silver earrings, and most importantly, a gently used red Coach purse - woo hoo! I then met up with Kirsten at her hair place...she was still wrapping up, so I went to a nearby coffee shop and read my book club book (The Story of Edgar Sawtelle) and enjoyed some iced tea. We then met up with Kirsten's boyfriend, Jason, for dinner.

The next day (Sunday, June 28th) we got up early and decided to do one touristy thing on my trip - go on the Architecture boat tour along the Chicago River.

Kirsten then drove me to the airport and I had a long flight home. I wasn't excited because I couldn't get a direct flight, but had a LONG layover in St. Louis. Not being entirely thrilled about hanging out at the airport for 4-5 hours, I decided to make the most of it and found out the light rail left from the airport directly into downtown and I could see the famous Gateway Arch! So I paid my $3 fare and 30 minutes later, I was in downtown St. Louis. Along the way I passed Busch Stadium, the home of the St. Louis Cardinals and where the 2009 All-Star game will be played in a few weeks. While I didn't see the inside, the outside looked really cool. I got off at the Arch stop and walked around. The line was too long for me to get tickets and ride the elevator to the top of the Arch, but I was able to walk around underneath it. I will have to come back here to ride to the top and explore the musuems they have underground as part of it.

There was a cool permanent, bronze statute in the water

Not sure if you can tell from this photo, but the water in the Mississippi River was REALLY muddy

I was able to get back on the light rail and to the airport in time for my flight. I got to SeaTac and by this time, was completely exhausted. Of course I forgot what level I parked on, so I spent a good half hour walking around the parking garage WITH ALL OF MY LUGGAGE. I was very irritated, so when I got home, all I could do was collapse into bed, but Lucy wouldn't stop licking my face. Love that dog!

Weekend in Yakima

One of Clark's college friends, Forest, was getting married in Yakima so we decided to make it a fun little weekend getaway. After dropping Lucy off at Izzy's house for her first doggie sleepover, we took off and headed to Central Washington. Clark was excited to show Andrea one of his old stomping grounds.

Having been to Palm Springs earlier this year, this sign is just freaking hilarious because it is the furthest from the truth! Yakima is NOTHING like Palm Springs. Perhaps the sunny weather, but other than that, no similarities.

First stop - the wedding of Forest and Jenny at Apple Tree Golf Course. It was a beautiful outdoor ceremony with a reception indoors with great views.

Pucker up sweetie!

Okay, after a night of drinking, eating, dancing, and celebrating with friends, we were so tired. The next day we went golfing at one of the municipal, public 9-hole courses. We only played 9 holes because Clark was having an "off" day and starting to get irritated. However, one of the fun things was that Andrea made her FIRST birdie!

Here is my ball on the green after my tee shot (240 yards!) and I just barely missed this Eagle putt, but nailed the birdie putt - woo hoo!

After golfing, Clark insisted on taking me to lunch at Miner's for a famous Miner's burger. Aside from Dicks in Spokane, Frisko Freeze in Tacoma, the Pick Quick in Fife, Clark claims a Miner's burger is high up there. He was indeed right on how delicious it was. Their special sauces were tasty and the fries were cooked to perfection. We are always on our continual quest for the best burger and don't know which one ranks #1...however, there is some tough competition with Five Guys, which we discovered while living in DC, but a franchise recently opened up in Renton and a hometown favorite of Andrea's is Stanich's in Portland. However, kudos to Miner's for a delicious burger.

I think Clark was so excited to take me to Miner's that we got a speeding ticket - whoops! We were going 45 MPH in a 30 MPH zone. That sounds fast, but it was a main road, so I assumed the speed limit was 35 and we were coming down a hill and the cop was sitting at the bottom. What a speed trap! And to top it off, he was a complete DICK! What a surprise, right? Yeah, sorry for all my cop friends out there, but I am not a big fan of you...why is it that you always have to be such an arrogant, cocky SOB when you pull someone over? He could have seen that Clark didn't have a speeding ticket since 2001 and given us the benefit of the doubt since we don't live there that we didn't know the speed limit and it was ON A HILL. Instead, he writes a ticket for $100 and then apologizes for "ruining our Sunday." I was thinking, if you were REALLY concerned about ruining our Sunday (Father's Day nonetheless), then you would have NOT written us the ticket and given us a warning since Clark hasn't been pulled over in 7 years! What an a**hole!

Anyway...after the speeding ticket and a Miner's burger, we thought we'd do a little wine tasting before we headed home. We checked out Silver Lake Winery and Piety Flats Winery - both were delicious and we bought a total of 7 bottles of wine. Forgot to snap pics of us at the wineries tasting wine (what am I thinking?) so you will just have to trust me that these wineries were both beautiful and tasty.

Then we headed home and took the scenic drive so we could get an up-close view of Mt. Rainier...too bad it was overcast and rainy once we got closer to the mountain - BOO!

Oh well, cheers to a fun-filled weekend!
