Independence Day - Happy Birthday America!

I was really excited because I had a 4-day weekend and wanted to take advantage of it by going away somewhere fun or jam packing our weekend with fun activities...but of course Clark had to work part of the weekend, so we weren't able to get away for the entire weekend, but we did manage to pack our weekend full of fun.

Friday morning I went and played tennis while Clark worked for a few hours. Then we met up for lunch at home and went golfing at Meadows Park Golf Course in South Tacoma/Lakewood. The weather was beautiful and sunny. We were able to get in some warm up and practice on the driving range as well as some chips and putts. I don't have any pictures from our golf outing, but I had a fantastic putting day. I 2-putted every hole except for 2 holes I 3-putted and 1 hole that I 1-putted. Clark tells me the key to breaking 100 is through my short game (a.k.a. chipping and putting). So I was so happy when I had a great putting day. However, it happened to be a horrible day for me at the tee. Usually I am able to keep the ball in the fairway, but it was all over the place today. So I didn't break 100, but it was fun.

On Saturday (the actual 4th of July) we slept in and then took Lucy for a walk down to the Tacoma Freedom Fair along the waterfront. It was an especially hot day, so we packed a backpack of ice water, sandwiches, and snacks. We wanted to get a set along the beach for the airshow. While we were down there, we thought we'd try to get Lucy to swim. After all, Lucy is mostly lab, so she is a water dog and should love the water. However, she is afraid of the hose, sprinklers, and will not go in her pool in the backyard....instead she drinks out of it like a large water bowl. We figured if we could get her to fetch a stick or see other dogs go in the water, she might follow. She has walked in the ocean on various occasions, but never deep enough to swim. We haven't taken her camping yet, so will have to try a river or lake...maybe that will do the trick.

Right before Lucy gets this deep in the water, she squats and pees. Seriously? So embarrassing! I mean, she has all of the sand and beach to do her business and instead she chooses to pee in the water? I guess I wouldn't be too embarrassed except for it was the 4th of July and there were HUNDREDS of people sitting there and they all looked at me like "what the heck are you doing letting your dog pee in the water?"

This is about as deep as Lucy will go...up to her chest, but where her feet still touch the bottom

Lucy is on to what Clark is trying to do and she says, "you can't trick me!"

But even still, Lucy LOVES chewing on sticks, so she indulges Clark in his game a little longer

Lucy finally had enough and turned around and headed towards Mama

Lucy started digging in the sand

Lucy loves being a dirty girl

Lucy liked the airshow too

After the airshow, we headed home and had a few friends over for a BBQ at our house. We grilled hot dogs, chicken teriyaki burgers, and homemade burgers (lean ground beef, crumbled feta cheese, chopped red onion, seasoning, and Worchester sauce). We also had layer dip with chips, beer, potato salad, macaroni salad, and fruit pizza. After BBQing, we walked to the top of the hill for a prime view of the fireworks on the Tacoma waterfront.

On Sunday, we decided to take a day trip to the beach. After watching the exciting men's Wimbledon final between Roddick and Federer, we headed out. Lucy LOVES the beach and everything about it - chasing sea gulls, running on the beach, digging in the sand, and smelling all the beach scents.

Look at what a happy girl Lucy is!

It was SOOOO windy...sand was blowing EVERYWHERE...look at the wind blow Lucy's ears around!

Lucy loved checking everything out and sniffing everything

Who couldn't love this face? Look at all that sand on her face - too cute!

Again, despite our best attempts to get her to go into the water, she would only go in deep enough for her paws to touch the sand...not deep enough to swim.

After a nice, long walk on the beach, we had a delicious lunch of clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and fish and chips - yummy! We drove around Ocean Shores some more and would have stayed longer for more walking and playing on the beach, but it was SO cold and windy and it started to rain...so we headed home.

It was a great weekend. Clark had to return to work on Monday, but I had the day off, so I spent the day doing laundry and house cleaning.
